A red rotary telephone sits on the counter. The phone begins ringing. MARCUS: Nobody has used that phone in years. AVA: Then somebody really wants us to answer it. Lena walks toward the desk. SHOT 2 — MEDIUM ON LENA — 0:08–0:16 The phone continues ringing. Lena reaches out, grips the receiver, and completely lifts it from the cradle. The receiver remains visibly in Lena’s hand. LENA: Hello? A pause. VOICE ON PHONE: Room 814. Come alone. Lena does not put the receiver back yet. SHOT 3 — THREE-SHOT — 0:16–0:25 Lena is still holding the receiver. Marcus steps closer. MARCUS: Who was it? LENA: They want me upstairs. AVA: You’re not going alone. Lena now places the receiver completely back onto the cradle. The phone stays there. SCENE 2 — ELEVATOR LOBBY — CONTINUOUS SHOT 4 — FOUR-SHOT — 0:25–0:34 Lena, Marcus, and Ava reach the elevator. Daniel is already standing beside the doors. Lena presses the UP button once. It lights. DANIEL: You’re going to eight fourteen, aren’t you? LENA: How do you know that? MARCUS: Better question—who are you? Daniel does not answer. SHOT 5 — MEDIUM ON DANIEL / AVA — 0:34–0:43 The illuminated elevator button remains lit. Daniel pulls a hotel keycard from his jacket pocket and holds it visibly between two fingers. DANIEL: That room has been locked for six years. AVA: Then why do you have a key? Daniel keeps possession of the keycard. The elevator doors open. SHOT 6 — ELEVATOR INTERIOR — 0:43–0:52 All four step inside. Daniel still holds the same keycard. Lena presses floor 8 once. The doors begin closing. MARCUS: Nobody touches anything when we get there. LENA: Agreed. DANIEL: That may not be your choice. The doors close completely. SCENE 3 — EIGHTH FLOOR — CONTINUOUS SHOT 7 — HALLWAY — 0:52–1:00 The elevator doors open onto a dark hallway. Room 814 is directly ahead. Daniel steps out first, still holding the keycard. Before anyone reaches the door, the handle of Room 814 slowly turns by itself. Everyone stops. AVA: Daniel… who’s inside? DANIEL: Nobody. The door begins opening. CUT TO BLACK.
